What you'll learn

By the end of this lesson, you'll be able to use stressed auxiliaries (do, does, did, can, will, have) for emphasis and contradiction.

When do I use it?

When you speak, you can STRESS the auxiliary to add emphasis. In writing, use italics or the words "really"/"do":

  • Contradicting: "You don't like it? I DO like it." (not the opposite)
  • Confirming strongly: "She DOES work here — I've seen her."
  • Emphatic advice: "You DID lock the door, didn't you?"

Normally "I like it" has no auxiliary — but to add emphasis, add do/does/did.

How do I form it?

Structure

do / does / did + base verb (present/past emphasis) modal / have + emphasis

  • I do understand your point.
  • She does play the piano, actually.
  • He did finish the project on time.
  • We will win, I promise.
  • You have grown so much!

Common mistakes for Spanish speakers

Warning

Spanish adds "sí que" for emphasis ("sí que me gusta"), which speakers translate literally as "yes I like it" — losing the strength. The English trick is the stressed auxiliary: "I DO like it". Do not use the auxiliary for emphasis with "to be" or modals (they already have one — just stress it): "I DO am tired" is wrong; it's "I AM tired". And do not add "do" twice: "She does plays" is wrong.

Hint

Add do/does/did before the base verb when you want to stress a normal verb: "I DO like it."
