What you'll learn
By the end of this lesson, you'll be able to express conditions without a conditional clause at all, using phrases like but for, otherwise, and context.
When do I use it?
Advanced implied conditionals hide the condition inside a prepositional phrase or leave it to context:
- But for / without + noun = if it weren't for: "But for your help, I would have failed." "Without you, we'd be lost."
- otherwise / or else = if that didn't happen: "We must go, otherwise we'll miss it."
- Context only: "I would have come, but I was ill." (= ...if I hadn't been ill)
- Imperative + and/or: "Hurry, or you'll be late." "Call me and I'll pick you up."
How do I form it?
But for + noun, + would/would have otherwise / or else + negative result context + but + reason (implied condition)
- But for the map, we would have got lost.
- Without funding, the project would collapse.
- Stop talking, or you'll leave the room.
- Give him a chance and he will surprise you.
- I would have visited, but I had no time. (implied: if I'd had time)
Common mistakes for Spanish speakers
Spanish "si no fuera por" becomes "but for" or "if it weren't for" — speakers often translate word-for-word as "but not for" or "but for of". And "si no" is NOT "if not" here: "we must go, if not we'll be late" should be "otherwise/or". Keep "but for + noun" (never a clause: "but for you helped me" is wrong — "if it hadn't been for your help"). The "but + reason" implied conditional needs a past context to be understood.
but for / without + noun = the condition. otherwise / or = the consequence. Context + but + reason = implied.
