What you'll learn
By the end of this lesson, you'll be able to mix time frames in conditionals: past condition → present result, and present condition → past result.
When do I use it?
Mixed conditionals join two different time frames in one sentence.
Type 1 — past condition, present result: something happened (or not) in the past, so the present situation is different now.
- "If I had studied medicine, I would be a doctor now." (past: didn't study → present: not a doctor)
Type 2 — present condition, past result: a present characteristic explains a past action.
- "If he weren't so shy, he would have spoken at the meeting." (present: he is shy → past: he didn't speak)
How do I form it?
if + past perfect, would + base verb (past → present) if + past simple, would have + past participle (present → past)
- If she had caught the train, she would be here now. (past → present)
- If I were you, I would have accepted the job. (present → past)
- They would speak to me if I hadn't lied. (present result after past cause)
- If we had more money, we would have bought a bigger house. (present → past)
Common mistakes for Spanish speakers
Spanish mixes these freely ("si hubiera estudiado, sería médico"), but speakers often use the second conditional for everything, which loses the meaning. Match the structure to the time: past condition + present result = had done → would do; present condition + past result = did → would have done. And as in all conditionals, never "would" inside the if-clause: "If I would have studied medicine..." is wrong.
Which time frames? Past → present: if + had done, would + do. Present → past: if + did, would have + done.
