When do I use it?
Advanced negative inversion places the inversion in complex structures with two or more clauses:
- not only... but also across clauses: "Not only did she win the award, but she also gave a brilliant speech."
- not until + clause: "Not until I read the letter did I understand." (the clause after not until does NOT invert)
- in no way / by no means + modal: "By no means is this the best option."
- no sooner... than with two past events: "No sooner had the meeting started than the fire alarm rang."
How do I form it?
Not until + clause, + auxiliary + subject + verb Not only + auxiliary + subject + verb, but also + clause
- Not until we arrived did we notice the damage.
- Not only does she sing, but she also writes songs.
- By no means can we accept that offer.
- In no way was the report accurate.
- No sooner had we sat down than the waiter arrived.
Common mistakes for Spanish speakers
In "not until + clause", the inversion happens in the MAIN clause, not the "until" clause: "Not until I arrived did I see it" — never "did I arrive". In "not only... but also", the first clause inverts and the second is normal. Speakers also invert the wrong auxiliary or double the negative: "by no means we cannot accept" is wrong — keep ONE negative: "by no means can we accept".
Invert only the main clause after 'not until'. Invert only the first clause after 'not only'. One negative only.
