When do I use it?
Advanced nominalisation builds long noun phrases and chains them together — the hallmark of academic and professional style:
- "The implementation of the new policy led to a reduction in costs." (verbs → nouns)
- "There was a significant increase in the level of competition."
- "The effectiveness of the treatment was questioned."
Nominalisation also lets you express cause and effect compactly: "The failure to comply resulted in a penalty."
How do I form it?
the + noun + of + noun (noun phrase) there was + noun + in + noun (result focus)
- The introduction of the software improved productivity.
- There was a decline in the number of complaints.
- The analysis of the results confirmed the hypothesis.
- His lack of experience was a disadvantage.
Common mistakes for Spanish speakers
Over-nominalisation is the classic error — Spanish academic text nominalises heavily, and students translate "el análisis de los resultados conduce a la conclusión de que..." word for word, producing dense English that is hard to read. Use nominalisation in formal writing, but break chains over 2-3 nouns: "the analysis of the results" is fine; "the analysis of the results of the study of the population" is not. Keep the noun + of structure, and check article agreement: "an increase in", "a reduction in", "the implementation of".
