By the end of this lesson, you'll be able to ask yes/no questions with the correct word order and answer them with short answers.
When do I use it?
Use yes/no questions when you want a "yes" or "no" answer. With the verb "to be", move it to the front ("Are you tired?"). With other verbs, bring in "do" or "does" ("Do you like coffee?"). Short answers repeat the helper: "Yes, I do / No, she doesn't."
How do I form it?
To be: Are you happy? Do/Does: Do you have a car? Does she speak English? Short answer: Yes, I do. No, she doesn't.
Common mistakes for Spanish speakers
Spanish can form a question just by changing your voice ("Tienes un coche?"), but English needs the helper to move: "You have a car?" is wrong, use "Do you have a car?" In the third person, the helper carries the -s: "Does she likes pizza?" is wrong — the main verb goes back to its base form, "Does she like pizza?"
With any verb except "to be", imagine "do/does" arriving first and gently knocking the -s off the main verb.
